Aboriginal Law

At its core an Aboriginal Law practice requires an understanding of the history of aboriginal peoples in Canada, the Treaty rights associated with that history, and how the present day interpretation of those Treaty rights and the Indian Act affects aboriginal communities and its members. At Ottenheimer Baker we have been acting for the Aboriginal peoples of Newfoundland and Labrador for decades, and continue to do so. We regularly provide:

  • Advice on the implementation and development of aboriginal self-government processes;

  • General legal advice to First Nation clients in areas such as tendering, employment law, administrative law, contract drafting and interpretation and band governance; and,

  • Advice on commercial matters including economic development initiatives, major financings and acquisitions and the negotiation of joint venture agreements with non-aboriginal businesses.

In addition to the services we provide First Nations, Aboriginal Economic Development Boards and Aboriginal Governments, Ottenheimer Baker has been involved in the settlement of hundreds of residential school claims for aboriginal clients and continues to provide many aboriginal people with their day-to-day legal needs.
